Iconic film: My fair lady (1964)

Audrey Hepburn wasn’t only a style icon but also an excellent actress as you can appreciate in the film I’m presenting you today: My Fair Lady (1964).

Directed by George Cukor and starred also by Rex Harrison, the film is an adaptation of original stage play Pygmalion (1913) by George Bernard Shaw.

It tells the story of a misogynistic phonetics professor Henry Higgings (Rex Harrison) who meets a vulgar flower girl at the exit of the theater Eliza Doolittle (Audrey Hepburn). He’s so sure about his teaching skills that bets with his best friend to “ transform” that young girl so as to pass her off as a duchess at an embassy ball. Although Eliza hates him due to his methods and self-demanding classes she falls in love with him. And so does him.

The wardrobe was designed by Cecil Beaton (who was the official photographer of Vanity Fair and Vogue for many years). Thanks to his amazing work he won the Oscar for Costume Design.

The film is a jewel not to be missed. I strongly suggest you to watch it in its original version because listening to Audrey Hepburn playing a vulgar and comic girl it’s absolutely worth it (she’s hilarious!!)

Did you know...?

- First came the stage play and then, due to the huge success, came the film.
- Julie Andrews was the star who played Eliza in the theater.
- Although Audrey sang quite well she was finally dubbed ‘cause her voice was judged “inadequate” (and that’s was her biggest career disappointment as his son confessed years after her death)
- The film was awarded with 8 Oscar
-The original gown she wore in the Ascot race scene was owned by actress Debbie Reynolds. It was auctioned several months ago and someone paid... $3.7 million for it!!

Ladies, have you seen it?
Do you like it?

The professor meets the flower girl

"I'm a good girl..I am!!"

She visits the professor to take phonetics lessons

Taking her lessons...

"The rain in Spain stays mainly on the plane" / "La lluvia en Sevilla es una pura maravilla"

Eliza's father

Probably the most remembered gown of all

The test: she speaks and acts like a lady during Ascot races

While encouraging a horse to win the race she has a vulgar lapse: "C'mon Dover, move your bloomin' arse!"/ "Vamos Dover, mueve tu maldito culo!" (In my opinion the most hilarious moment of all!!)

Ready for the Embassy ball

Eliza, where the devil are my slippers?
