Iconic film: Spartacus (1960)

¡Buenos días chicas! Os engañaría si os digo que sé las veces que he visto esta película porque no lo sé… ¡he perdido la cuenta! Es uno de los pocos films que consiguen encandilarme de principio a fin. Una historia de lucha por la libertad, valor, odio, venganza, amor y pasión como pocas veces he visto en la gran pantalla

Dirigida en 1960 por Stanley Kubrick, protagonizada por Kirk Douglas, Jean Simmons, Laurence Olivier, Peter Ustinov, Charles Laughton y Toni Curtis y basada en la obra homónima escrita por Howard Fast, narra la historia del esclavo Espartaco y los hechos acaecidos durante la Tercera Guerra Servil .

La historia de amor entre Espartaco y Varinia (Jean Simmons) es una de las más hermosas que recuerdo no sólo por la increíble química entre los dos actores si no por algunas de la más hermosas escenas de la película (que en su momento fueron censuradas).

¿Sabíais qué…?

-La película se estrenó en 1960 en su versión íntegra aunque en 1967 se eliminaron 23 minutos de escenas de batallas violentas, la del baño de Craso (Laurence Olivier) con Antonino (Toni Curtis) en el que demuestra abiertamente su bisexualidad y alguna escena de amor entre Espartaco y Varinia.

-Las batallas de la película fueron rodadas en las afueras de Madrid y Guadalajara.

-El ejército romano estaba conformado realmente por reclutas del ejército español que actuaron como extras.

-Aunque la película tuvo un éxito descomunal y encumbró a Kubrick como director de prestigio, este nunca la sintió como realmente suya.

Good morning ladies! I would lie to you if I told you that I know how many times I’ve watched this film… I really don’t know it!! Is one of those films that mesmerized me from the beginning to the end. Few times you’ll see a story of love, passion, hate, revenge, fight for freedom and courage like this in the big screen.

Directed in 1960 by Stanley Kubrick, starred by Kirk Douglas, Jean Simmons, Laurence Olivier, Peter Ustinov, Charles Laughton and Toni Curtis and based on the novel written by Howard Fast, it tells the story of the slave Spartacus and the events of the Third Servile War.

The love story between Spartacus and Varinia (Jean Simmons) is one of the most beautiful I can remember not only because of the chemistry among them but also for the beautiful scenes in the film (some of them censored at that time).

Did you know that...?

-The film was released in 1960 in its complete version, but was eventually cut in 1967. The 23 minutes censored contained violent battles, the bath scene with Craso (Laurence Olivier) talking with Antonino (Toni Curtis) about his bisexuality and some love scenes between Spartacus and Varinia.

-The battle scenes were filmed in the outskirts of Madrid and Guadalajara (Spain).

-Eight thousand trained soldiers from the Spanish infantry were used to double as the Roman army.

-Despite the film being a huge box office success, and being considered to rank among the very best of historical epics, Kubrick disowned the movie, as he didn’t feel it as “its own”

Iconic film: Angel face (1952)

¡Buenos días chicas! Estrenamos la semana con una de las películas más inquietantes que he visto en los últimos años: Cara de ángel (1952)

Dirigida por Otto Preminger (maestro del cine negro) y protagonizada por Jean Simmons y Robert Mitchum, narra la historia de Diane una muchacha de apariencia dulce que se enamora perdidamente de Frank un conductor de ambulancias. Aunque Frank tiene novia, Diane se las ingeniará par hacer creer a Frank que le ama más que nadie en este mundo. Pero ese amor se convertirá en una obsesión que Diane esta dispuesta a hacer perdurar a toda costa…

Cara de ángel es uno de esos thrillers psicológicos de impecable factura y con un final totalmente inesperado, ¡de esos que te deja con la boca abierta!

Good morning ladies! We start de week with one of the most disturbing films I’ve seen lately: Angel face (1952)

Directed by Otto Preminger (master of film noir) and starred by Jean Simmons and Robert Mitchum, it tells the story of sweet Diane who madly falls in love with Frank, an ambulance driver. Eventhough he has a girlfriend, Diane will manage to make him believe she’s crazy in love with him. And God she is! Up to the point of keeping him no matter what…

Angel face is one of those impeccably made psychological thrillers with an unexpected “finale”… the kind of ending that leaves you with your mouth open!!

Ladies you can’t miss it!!

Iconic film: The Princess Bride (1987)

"Hola. Soy Iñigo Montoya. Tu mataste a mi padre. Prepárate a morir”. Si sois cinéfilas como yo, seguro que reconocéis esta frase ¿verdad? ;-) La dice uno de los protagonistas de “La Princesa Prometida” (1987) uno de los mejores films románticos de los 80 y cinta que con los años se ha convertido en película de culto.

Dirigida por Rob Reiner y basada en el libro homónimo de Wiliam Goldman, está protagonizada por Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Chris Sarandon, Mandy Patinkin y Wallace Shawn. Narra la historia de la hermosa Buttercup y Westley, su mozo de cuadras, quien está locamente enamorado de ella. Cuando Buttercup se da cuenta que ella siente lo mismo por Westley, se lo confiesa y éste se va a hacer fortuna para volver y casarse con ella. Pero Westley es capturado por el malvado pirata Roberts y Buttercup cree que su amado ha muerto…

“La Princesa Prometida” en una clásica película de aventuras y amor, de esas que deja un buen sabor de boca por su final feliz, con una música preciosa, unos paisajes de ensueño (“cortesía” de Gran Bretaña e Irlanda) y algunas de las frases mas célebres de la historia del cine (“Cómo desees”- contesta Westley a Buttercup cada vez que ella le habla, queriendo decir “Te quiero”).

“Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You kill my father. Prepare to die”. If you´re a film buff like I am you’ll probably know that quote, don’t you? It’s from one of the leading roles of “The Princess Bride” (1987) the most romantic film of the 80´s and a movie that has become a cult classic.

Directed by Rob Reiner and based on the novel of the same name by William Goldman, it’s starred by Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Chris Sarandon, Mandy Patinkin and Wallace Shawn. It tells the story of beautiful Buttercup and Westley, her farmboy, who is deeply in love with her. When Buttercup realizes that she feels the same about him, she admits and he decides to leave to seek his fortune so they can marry. But Westley is captured by dread Pirate Roberts and Buttercup believes his beloved is dead…

“The Princess Bride” is one of those adventure and love classic films, which makes you feel great due to the happy ending, with a gorgeous soundtrack, dreamy landscapes (“courtesy” of Great Britain and Ireland) and some of the most famous quotes of the cinema history (“As you wish” - answers Westley to Buttercup each time she speaks to him, meaning “I love you”)

Iconic film: Picnic (1955)

¡Buenos días chic@s! ¿Qué tal vuestro fin de semana? ¡Espero que hayáis descansado!

Retomamos una de mis secciones favoritas en el blog con una película que volví a ver hace poco: Picnic (1955) -nominada a seis Oscars y ganadora de dos-.

Dirigida por Joshua Logan y protagonizada por William Holden, Kim Novak, Susan Strasberg, Rosalind Russell y Arthur O’Connell la película narra la historia de Hal Carter (Holden) un jugador de fútbol venido a menos que llega a un pueblo de Kansas en busca de la ayuda de un viejo amigo del colegio. La llegada de Hal (justo el día de la fiesta de trabajo) supone un gran altibajo para la tranquilidad del pueblo, en especial cuando se enamora de Madge Owens (Novak) quien está prometida con su mejor amigo Alan Benson (Cliff Robertson).

La historia se desarrolla en sólo 24 horas y en un perfecto ejemplo de la vida rural en los años 50 en la América profunda (de hecho algunas de las escenas de las fiesta del trabajo son reales, por lo que casi suponen un documental)

Good morning guys!! How’s been your weekend?? Hope you enjoyed it!!

Today we go back to one of my favourite sections with one film I saw again not long ago: Picnic (1955) – nominated to six Academy Awards and winner of two.

Directed by Joshua Logan and starred by William Holden, Kim Novak, Susan Strasberg, Rosalind Russell and Arthur O’Connell the films tells the story of Hal Carter (Holden) an ex-football hero who arrives to a rural Kansas town in search of an old school friend. His arrival (just on Labor Day) turns the town’s tranquillity upside down, particularly when he falls I love with Magde Owens (Novak) who’s engaged with his best friend Alan Benson (Cliff Robertson)

The plot happens in 24 hours and is a perfect example of the 50’s rural life in deep America (in fact some of the scenes of the Labor Day are semi-documentary as they were recorded during a real Labor Day celebration)
