Iconic film: West Side Story (1961)

Hello ladies!

We begin the week with the recommendation of one of the best films in the cinema history ever: West Side Story (1961). Directed by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins (one of the best choreographers of its time) it won the mere of 10 Oscars, only overcame by the 11 Oscar that won Ben-Hur, Titanic and The Lord of the Rings.

The film is a modern adaptation of the classic William Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet. Maria (Natalie Wood) is a Puerto Rican girl that fells in love with Toni (Richard Beymer) an American with Irish roots. The relationship would be ok if it wasn’t for the fact that Maria’s brother Bernardo (George Chakiris) is the leader of the Sharks whilst Toni is the best friend of Riff, the leader of the Jets two street gangs that hate each other to death. And that’s why problems start. Maria and Toni are hopessly in love ignoring the hate and rivalty of the gangs. But a tragic destiny awaits them.

West Side Story is practically a moving painting: each scene, each note, each song, each choreography step is absolute perfection. Not for nothing Jerome Robbins made the dancers rehearse to the point of extenuation (some of them had to be sent to the hospital!)

A masterpiece of the Seventh Art that you cant’ miss.
Happy beginning of the week!
