Iconic film: The Piano (1993)

Si habéis visto El Piano (1993) de Jane Campion creo que estaréis de acuerdo conmigo en que se trata de una preciosa e inusual historia de amor. Si no la habéis visto, os perdéis una de las mejores películas románticas que se han rodado en la historia del cine…

Protagonizada por Holly Hunter, Harvey Keitel, Sam Neil y una jovencísima Anna Paquin, El Piano narra la historia de Ada McGrath (Hunter) un joven escocesa muda la que su padre “vende” en matrimonio al adinerado Allistair Stewart (Neil). Ada es enviada junto a su hija Flora (Paquin) a un remoto lugar de Nueva Zelanda y abandonada en la playa junto con sus pertenencias a la espera de la llegada de su marido. Cuando éste llega le impide llevarse el piano que se queda en la playa a la espera de ser recogido… Ada siente que una parte de ella se queda también allí pero resignada acata la voluntad de su marido.

Con la ayuda de su vecino George Baines (Keitel), Ada y Flora consiguen viajar de nuevo a la playa y tocan el piano (desde mi punto de vista una de las escenas más preciosas de la película). Allistair decide vender el piano a George ante el enfado de Ada. Pero George le propone devolvérselo si antes le enseña a tocarlo. A partir de aquí se inicia un historia de amor poco convencional …

La película estuvo nominada a 8 Oscars y se alzó con tres de ellos: mejor actriz (Holly hunter), mejor actriz de reparto (Anna Paquin) y mejor guión original. También fue la ganadora de la Palma de Oro del Festival de Cannes en 1993. La banda sonara compuesta por Michael Nyman fue un hit de ventas aquel año.

Con esta película Jane Campion consigue abordar de una forma sutil, elegante y delicada un tema difícil (el amor a tres bandas) desde una perspectiva femenina que probablemente hubiera resultado muy diferente  desde un punto de vista masculino. (Ni mejor ni peor, simplemente diferente).

Starred by Holly Hunter, Harvey Keitel, Sam Neil and a very young Anna Paquin, The Piano tells the story of Ada McGrath (Hunter) A ute Scottish woman that is” sold” by her father to the wealthy Allistair Stewart (Neil). Ada is sent with her daughter Flora (Paquin) to a remote village in New Zealand and abandoned in the beach with her belongings while waiting for her husband to pick her up. When he arrives he denies to carry with the piano so it’s left on the beach… Ade feels that a part of her stays with her piano but obeys her husband and follow him.

With the help of neighbor George Baines (Keitel), Ada and Flora come back to the beach to look after the piano and play it (from my point of view one of the most beautiful scenes in the film). Later on Allistair decide to sell the piano to George. Ada is heartbroken and rightfully angry, but can do nothing. George propose her to give him piano lessons in exchange of the piano… It starts then an unusual yet captivating love story…

The film was nominated to 8 Academy awards and won three of them: best actress (Holly Hunter), best supporting actress (Paquin) and best original screenplay. It was alos the winner of the Cannes Festival Golden Palm in 1993. The soundtrack written but Michael Nyman was a hit and the album sold millions of copies.

Jane Campion explains this love triangle with a subtle, elegant and delicate tone that I don’t think any male director could articulate. I’m not telling that it would have been best or worts. It would have been simply different.
