Iconic film: Memoirs of a Geisha (2005)

This week I would like to suggest you a film that, from my point of view, is aesthetically perfect (if you follow my blog you’ll know what I mean!!). I’m talking about Memoirs of a Geisha.

Rob Marshall’s version of the book wrote in 1997 by Arthur Golden was filmed in 2008 and starred by Zhang Ziyi, Gong Li and Michelle Yeoh (three Chinese actresses for big controversy). The result is pretty amazing. Even though I 'd rather prefer the book (the moment when she first kisses the President it’s impossible to translate into the big screen), I must recognized that the artistic direction and the wardrobe design deserve an ovation.

The professional responsible for the wardrobe was Colleen Atwood , nine times nominated for an Academy Award for Best Costume Design and winner of three of them for Chicago (2002), Memoirs of a  Geisha (2006) and Alice in Wonderland (2010).

The kimonos were designed using real patterns from the 20, 30 and 40's, they had four layers and two persons and one hour were needed to ajust them correctly.

The make-up of the geishas was altered a little. The director  thought geishas were the fasionistas of their time so they opted for fuller lips, darker eyes, less white make-up and a  back neck line lower than usual to give them a provocative air.

The music, wrote by John Williams, along with the photography (from Dion Beebe) are the icing on the cake of this jewel not to be missed.
