Iconic film: Robin and Marian (1976)

Robin y Marian es probablemente una de las películas menos conocida de Audrey Hepburn. Supuso su regreso al cine tras 8 años de ausencia y la protagonizó junto a Sean Connery (Robin Hood), Richard Harris (Ricardo Corazón de León) y Robert Shaw (sheriff de Nottingham).

Richard Lester dirigió en 1976 esta especie de “segunda parte” de Robin Hood que se inicia con la vuelta a casa de Robin, cansado de luchar en las cruzadas en nombre del rey. Allí descubre que Lady Marian (el amor de su vida) se ha convertido en monja y decide ir a buscarla al convento para llevársela contra su voluntad.

Poco más os voy a contar sobre esta preciosa historia de amor cuyo momento cumbre lo tiene en esta frase que Marian le dice a Robin: "Te amo…más de lo que puedes imaginar. Te amo más que a los niños, más que a los campos que planté con mis manos, más que a la plegaria de la mañana, más que a la paz, más que a la alegría, más que al amor, más que a la vida entera. Te amo más que a Dios".

Robin and Marian is probably one of the most unknown films of Audrey Hepburn. The film marked Hepburn's return to the screen after an eight year absence and was also starred by Sean Connery (Robin Hood), Richard Harris (King Richard the Lion-heart) and Robert Shaw (the sheriff of Nottingham).

Richard Lester directed in 1976 this kind of “Robin Hood second part” that starts with the come back of Robin, who is tired of fighting in the Crusades in name of the King. Once there he discovers that Lady Marian (the love of his life) has become a nun and he decides to find her and get her off the convent against her will.  

Little more am I going to tell you about this great love story that achieves its climax with this sentence Marian says to Robin: “I love you… more than all you know. I love you more than children. More than fields I've planted with my hands. I love you more than morning prayers or peace or food to eat. I love you more than sunlight, more than flesh or joy, or one more day. I love you...more than God”

Iconic film: Marnie (1964)

Empezamos la semana con una de mis películas favoritas de Hitchcock (junto con Atrapa a un ladrón y La ventana indiscreta): Marnie la ladrona

Dirigida en 1964  por Alfred Hitchcock está protagonizada por Sean Connery (Mark Rutland), Tippi Hedren (Marnie) - que para las que no lo sepáis es la madre de Melanie Griffith - y Diane Baker (Lil Mainwaring, cuñada de Mark). La película narra la historia de Marnie una ladrona patológica que sobrevive de robar grandes sumas de dinero en las empresas donde trabaja como secretaria. Cada cambio de trabajo le supone un nuevo cambio de personalidad. Cuando llega a la empresa de Mark Rutland en busca de un puesto de secretaria , éste siente una extraña atracción hacía ella que le hace investigar y descubrir quién es realmente Marnie. A cambio de no revelar su pasado, Mark obliga a Marnie a casarse con él . Pero  durante el viaje de novios descubrirá que robar y mentir nos son los únicos problemas que Marnie tiene: también tiene aversión a los hombres y odia el color rojo. El amor que Mark siente por ella hará que finalmente pueda resolver sus traumas.

El vestuario, a cargo una vez más de la maravillosa Edith Head, viste a la tortuosa protagonista de forma impecable con líneas puras, colores neutros, cuello abrochados hasta arriba y el cabello siempre impecablemente recogido, signos de una extrema pulcritud (que hacen intuir los problemas que tiene Marnie)

¿Sabíais qué…?

-En un principio el papel de Marnie lo aceptó Grace Kelly, que por aquel entonces ya era princesa de Mónaco, pero debido a la presión de sus súbditos (no querían que interpretase un papel de cleptómana) tuvo que rechazarlo.

-El film resultó un fracaso de taquilla en EEUU y en Gran Bretaña quiso calificarla película “X” debido a las temáticas que trata. Hoy se le considera la obra maestra de Hitchcock.

-Los efectos especiales fueron muy criticados por ser simplistas y evidentes pero puede justificarse si vemos en ellos la influencia del cine expresionista alemán por el que Hitchcock estuvo muy influenciado durante los primeros años de su carrera.

We begin the week with one of my three favorite Hitchcock’s films (along with To catch a thief and Rear Window): Marnie

Directed in 1964 by Hitchcock and starred by Sean Connery (Mark Rutland), Tippi Hedren (Marnie) for those of you who doesn’t know is Melanie Griffith’s mother and Diane Baker (Lil Mainwaring, Mark’s sister-in-law). The film tells the story of Marnie a pathologic thieve who survives thanks to the money she steals from the companies where she works. Each new job requires a new personality. But when she arrives to Marks Rutland’s company in the search for a secretary post, he feels a strange attraction towards her that push him to investigate and discover the “real” Marnie. In order not to reveal her past, Mark forces Marnie to marry him. But during their honeymoon he finds out that Marnie is a real troubled woman: she can’t stand to be touched and hates red colour.  The love Mark feels for her would end up with all her troubles.       

The wardrobe, once more designed by the amazing Edith Head, is full of pure lines, neutral colors, buttoned collars and impeccable updos, signs of extreme tidiness (that make us realize about the problem Marnie has).

Did you know that?

-The main role was offered first to Grace Kelly who accepted. But at that time she already was Princess Grace and the citizens of Monaco objected to her appearing in a film as a disturbed kleptomaniac. So she finally declined the offer.

-The film was not a hit in the USA and was about to be classified as “X” film in Great Britain due to the subjects it talks about. Today is consider Hitchcock’s masterpiece.

-The special effects where very defined as unconvincing and obvious but they can be justified if we think about the influence that German Expressionism had in Hitchcock's first years work.
