Iconic film: Pretty woman (1990)

 

¿Hace falta que os explique el argumento de esta película? Espero que no porque si me decís que no la habeís visto me da algo... ¡Jajajajaja!

Pretty Woman (1990) dirigida por Gary Marshall es una de las comedias románticas por excelencia de la historia del cine. Con un argumeneto poco habitual (y más que improbable) y una desconocida Julia Roberts la película se convirtió en un hit de la gran pantalla y una de las grandes "minas de oro" de los 90.

La cuidada banda sonora (con canciones inolvidables como Pretty woman de Roy Orbison o It must have been love de Roxette) así como un vestuario diseñado por Marilyn Vance-Straker con modelos que se han quedado para siempre en nuestra "memoria fashionista"  (como el vestido rojo o el blanco y azul con las botas mosqueteras) han hecho de Pretty Woman un película casi de culto.

La pregunta hoy no es si la habéis visto, si no... ¿cuántas veces la habéis visto? ¡¡Yo más de 10!! ;-)

Pretty Woman (1990) directed by Gary Marshall is one of the romantic comedies par excellence. With and unusual (and very unlikely) plot and an unkown Julia Roberts as the leading lady, the film was widely successful at the box office, and it became one of the highest money-makers of 1990.

The great soundtrack (with unforgettable songs such as Pretty woman from Roy Orbison or It must have been love from Roxette) along with the wardrobe created by Marilyn Vance-Straker with designs that will always remain in our "fashionista memory" (like the breathtaking red gown or the white and blue revealing dress with thigh-high boots) have made Pretty Woman practically a cult film.

Today the question is not if you have seen it, but... how many times have you seen it?? Me, more than 10!! ;-)

Iconic film: An officer and a gentleman (1982)

Película icónica donde las haya, “Oficial y caballero” (1982) es uno de eso films que ha pasado a formar parte de las fantasías eróticas del subconsciente femenino de una forma abrumadora. Vamos chicas ¿en serio nunca habéis soñado que un Richard Gere en uniforme os venía a buscar a vuestro trabajo y se os llevaba en brazos? ;-) Jajajaajaja

Bromas a parte, la película fue un bombazo de taquilla y catapultó definitivamente a Richard Gere a la categoría de sex symbol (antes ya había rodado American Gigolo). Protagonizada por Richard Gere, Debra Winger, Louis Gosett Jr., David Keith y Lisa Blount, narra la historia de Zack Mayo (Gere) un joven con una vida vacía y sin futuro que decide ingresar en una escuela de marina con la esperanza de labrarse un futuro. Allí se hace amigo de Sid (David Keith) y recibirán la durísima instrucción del sargento Foley (Louis Gossett Jr.) quien a pesar de su apariencia y maneras ayuda a Zack en la consecución de su sueño.   

Paralelamente conocen a dos chicas del pueblo Paula (Debra Winger) y Lynette (Lisa Blount) de las que ambos se enamoran aunque una de las historias acaba con trágico final. La escena en la que la que Zack va a buscar a Paula y se la lleva en brazos de la fábrica mientras suena de fondo “Up where we belong” forma ya parte de la iconografía de la historia del cine. (Por cierto la canción, interpretada por Joe Cocker y Jennifer Warnes, llegó al primer lugar de Billboard Hot 100, manteniéndose por 3 semanas en ese puesto. Fue galardonada también con el premio Oscar, el premio BAFTA y el premio Globo de Oro).

Iconic film par excellence, “An officer and a gentleman” (1982) is one of those films that has became part of the feminine erotic fantasies in a deeply moving way. Come on ladies, have you never dreamt of your own Richard Gere coming up for you and taking you into his arms?? ;-) LOL

No joke, the film was an enormous box office success and definitely launched Gere to the sex symbol stardom (he had previously filmed American Gigolo). Starred by Richard Gere, Debra Winger, Louis Gosett Jr., David Keith and Lisa Blount, it tells the story of Zack Mayo (Gere) a young man with no future and an empty life. Hoping to put his life on a different path,  Zack signs up for the Navy's Aviation Officer Candidate School (AOCS) to become a naval officer and Naval Aviator. There he meets Sid (David Keith) who becomes his best friend and receives the instruction of Sergeant Foley (Louis Gossett Jr.) who despite riding him mercilessly helps him to make his dream come true.

Besides that, they both meet tow locals girls who work in the village factory, Paula (Debra Winger) and Lynette (Lisa Blount). They both fall in love with the girls but one the histories finish in a dramatic way. The final scene where Gere arrives to the factory to carry her off with the song “Up where we belong” underneath it, is already part of the cinema history. (By the way, the song – performed by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes - became number one on the Billboard charts and stayed there for 3 weeks. It also won and Academy Award for Best Original Song, a BAFTA film award and a Golden Globe Award)

Iconic film : American Gigolo (1980)

Seguro que si os digo que American Gigolo fue la película que lanzó al estrellato a Richard Gere, no os extrañáis.

Dirigida por Paul Schrader en 1980 y coprotagonizada por Lauren Hutton y Héctor Elizondo (el inolvidable director de hotel de Pretty Woman), narra la historia de Julian Kaye (Richard Gere) un treintañero culto, inteligente y muy atractivo que vive de la prostitución. Una noche va a casa de un matrimonio para un servicio pero cuando la mujer aparece muerta al cabo de unos días, él se convierte en el principal sospechoso. Gracias a la ayuda de Michelle Sttraton (Lauren Hutton), la infeliz mujer de un político que se enamora perdidamente de él, Julian consigue librarse de la condena.

Le película marcó un hito en su época puesto que por primera vez en la historia del cine aparecía el desnudo frontal masculino de una gran estrella (el de Gere) además de tratar de forma explícita una temática poco habitual como es la de la prostitución masculina.

Por otra parte, supuso el reconocimiento de dos grandes figuras del mundo de la moda: Armani (que fue el encargado del vestuario de Gere) y Ralph Lauren (que vistió a Lauren Hutton, por cierto espectacular en esta película)

¡Un clásico que no debe faltar en vuestra filmoteca!

If I tell you that American Gigolo is the film that launched Richard Gere to stardom, you probably won’t be surprised…  

Directed by Paul Schrader in 1980 and co-starred by Lauren Hutton and Hector Elizondo (the unforgettable hotel manager of Pretty Woman), it tells the story of Julian Kaye (Richard Gere) an intelligent, educated and very attractive 30 something that works as a male prostitute. One night he goes to a clients’ house to make a service for a married couple. But when two days after the body of the woman is found dead he becomes the main suspect. Thanks to the help for Michelle Stratton (Lauren Hutton) the unhappy woman of a politician who falls madly in love with him, Julian is finally declared innocent.

The film was one of its kind as for the first time a great star (Gere) appeared frontally naked. 


Besides that, the film put Armani (in charge of Gere's wardrobe) and Ralph Lauren (who dressed Lauren Hutton) on the fashion map.
