Iconic film: Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954)

Seven brides for seven brothers (1954) is a musical directed by Stanley Donen and starred by Howard Keel and Jane Powell. The script is based in the short story “The Sobbin’ Women” by Stephen Vincent Benét which was based in turn on the roman legend “The Rape of the Sabine Women”.

Adam Pontipee is the oldest of seven backwoodsmen brothers who live in the mountains. One day, while shopping in the village, he meets Milly a strong beautiful waitress who he imagines has his perfect wife. She marries him despite knowing each other for only a few hours. But when they arrive “home” Milly realizes about the real reason Adam married her: he only wanted a maid for him and his six rough brothers. Small but with a strong character, she learn them manners and how to conquer a woman by acting like gentlemen. Thanks to Milly’s help, the brothers conquer the girl of their dreams during the barn-raising party. Unfortunately the girls have already suitors from the town. Adam encourage his brothers to take whatever action is necessary to get their women back. That’s when they’ve got the “excellent” idea of kidnapping the girls and bring them to the mountains…

The film is not only a visual jewel due to the colorful wardrobe designed by Walter Plunkett (wardrobe designer of “Gone with the wind” too) but also for its catchy music (composed by Saul Chaplin and Gee de Paul) and especially for the spectacular musical numbers choreographed by Michael Kidd (the scene of the barn-raising party is one of the best in the musical films history)

Maybe you’re thinking that I’m a bit boring ‘cause I suggest you many musicals. But the truth is that I firmly believe that music and dance cheers your spirit up… and nowadays we need to feel happier than ever!! (Ok, maybe the fact that I’m a dancer has something to do too… ;-) )

Hope you enjoy it ladies!!
