Today I’m going to talk about a film that is not very known here in Spain but I do believe it is in the rest of the world: Sex and the Single Girl.
Directed in 1964 by Richard Quine and starred by Natalie Wood, Toni Curtis, Henry Fonda , Lauren Bacall and Mel Ferrer it tells the story of Dr. Helen Brown (Natalie Wood) who has achieved fame thanks to her book Sex and the Single Girl where she encourages women to be economically independent and enjoy her sexuality whether they’re married or not. Bob Preston (Toni Curtis), an aggressive executive working in one of the worst magazines of the country, wants to expose her to the world has an “innocent 23 years old virgin” with no experience to advice other women. The plot is full of funny situations, the ones that make you laugh out loud.
The film was inspired by the non-fiction book Sex and the Single Girl written in 1962 by Dr. Helen Gurley Brown (editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan magazine for 32 years) and it was a hit as it sold 2 million copies in just 3 weeks.
The wardrobe, designed by the amazing Edith Head, is simply marvelous. I’ve seen the film more than 10 times and it still amazes me how she created a black and white complete wardrobe for the role of Dr. Brown (Natalie Wood) without looking boring and monotonous. The only colour dress appears at the end, when she finally falls in love. For the role os Silvia Broderick (Lauren Bacall) she used more intense colours so as to demonstrate her strong character. And for Gretchen (Fran Jeffries) she designed a pin up style wardrobe.
Another of the jewels I like to suggest you and that you can’t miss!
My dream office should be exactly like Dr. Brown's office... I felt in love with it from the very first time I saw the film (back in 1995!!) |
Have you seen the gorgeus striped chair matching the curtains and the chaise longue?? |
Pay attention to her gorgeous accesories: golden chunky bracelet, cocktail rings, rhinestone hair pin and eye-cat glasses |
Weston's appartement is more colourful and full of masculine details |
While Dr. Brown's appartement is a black and white dream came true |
I love the cream touches all around to avoid coldness |
GOOOOORGEUS white satin cocktail dress |
And this is "a simple" robe to stay home... |
The only touch of colour in Dr. Brown's wardrobe is this feminine canary yellow chiffon dress that appears at the end of the film |
Silvia's wardrobe is much more colourful |
And Gretchen (Bob's girlfriend) is more the pin up type girl |

I've had a tough time clearing my mind in getting my thoughts out. I do enjoy writing but it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes tend to be lost simply just trying to figure out how to begin. Any suggestions or tips? Many thanks!
