Ya hace varias semana que no os hablo de cine… ¡y la verdad es
que lo echo de menos…! Así que aprovechando esta asfixiante ola de calor que
nos ha invadido estos días hoy os presento una película muy adecuada para esta época:
El
largo y cálido verano.
Dirigida en 1958 por Martin Ritt y protagonizada por Paul Newman ,
Joanne Woodward, Anthony Franciosa, Lee Remick, Angela Lansbury y Orson Welles narra la historia de Ben Quick
(Newman) un forastero que llega a un pueblo sureño tras ser acusado de haber provocado un
incendio en la ciudad donde vivía. Allí es contratado por Will Varner (Welles) dueño y señor del lugar. Varner se encariña
con él hasta tal punto que pretende convertirlo en el marido de su virginal y
mojigata hija Clara (Woodward) quién no se fía de él ya que cree que tiene
otros motivos para estar trabajando allí. Inevitablemente, la tensión
sexual y el deseo reprimido pronto se hacen patentes entre ambos jóvenes…
Esta película (además de ser la primera en la que Newman
aparecía con su mujer Joanne Woodward) fue la demostración de que era algo más
que una cara bonita ya que ganó el
premio al mejor actor en el Festival de Cannes de aquel año.
Destacan las fantásticas interpretaciones de los actores
protagonistas, encabezadas por Orson Welles (inmenso en todos los sentidos),
Paul Newman (imponente en todos los sentidos), una excelente Joanne Woodward, la
bellísima Lee Remick y la divertida Angela Lansbury. Y por si esto no os deja
con ganas de verla, os transcribo la opinión de un crítico experto en cine Daniel
Andreas (de Filmaffinity) que creo describe a la perfección la intención de la película:
“La trama y los diálogos pedían pasión a raudales, pero los
buenos ciudadanos no hacen fuego en el pajar, y así no hay forma de propagar el
incendio. Cosas de la idiosincrasia local. Porque si esta misma historia se
rodara hoy en España y los corazones pudieran recalificarse, arde él, arde
ella, arde Logroño, arde Troya, y arden tirios y troyanos. Con o sin camiseta
imperio”

It’s been
for a while that I don’t talk you about cinema and to be honest… I miss it!! So
“taking advantage” of this suffocating heat wave that has invaded Spain today I
present you a film very adequate for this time of the year: The
hot, long summer.
Directed in
1958 by Martin Ritt and starred by Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, Anthony Franciosa, Lee Remick, Angela Lansbury and Orson Welles it tells the story of Ben Quick
(Newman) who arrives to a southern village after been accused of starting a
fire in his previous city. Ben manages to get a job and ends up working for the
wealthiest man in town Will Varner (Welles). Varner gets very attached to Ben
and thinks he would be a nice husband for her virginal and prudish daughter
Clara (Woodward). But she suspects him and doesn’t like her father’s idea.
Inevitably, a sexual tension and a
repressed desire soon blooms among the couple…
Besides the
fact that this was the first film where Newman appeared with her wife
(Woodward), it also was his opportunity to show that he was much more than a
pretty face as he won the Best Actor award in the Cannes Film Festival of that
year.
The outstanding
performances of the actors are worth to see, leaded by Orson Welles (immense
in every sense of the word), Paul Newman (smashing in every sense of the word)
and accompanied by the great Joanne Woodward, the beautiful Lee Remick and the
funny Angela Lansbury.
