Madame Chic Bcn: how to morder your wife

La película que os recomiendo esta semana es “Cómo matar a la propia esposa” dirigida en 1965 por Richard Quine y protagonizada por Jack Lemon, Virna Lisi y Terry Thomas.

Stanley Ford (Lemon) es un soltero por convicción que vive felizmente con su mayordomo Charles Firbank (Terry-Thomas) y con el que tiene un curioso trato: nada de esposas en casa o de lo contrario el dejará de servirle. Una noche durante una despedida de soltero Ford cae rendido ante una bellísima italiana a la que conoce saliendo de una tarta. Sus problemas empiezan cuando al día siguiente de la juerga se despierta al lado de ella...¡casado! Para colmo su mujer apenas habla inglés. El shock para su mayordomo es tal que decide dejar la casa, mientras que Stanley no sabe cómo deshacerse de su mujer que resulta ser una esposa cariñosa, apasionada y un tanto histriónica. Una tarde su ex-mayordomo le propone “matarla accidentalmente” y a cambio el volverá a casa con su señor. Y es entonces cuando Stanley empieza a tramar su plan…

Moss Mabry (nominado cuatro veces al Oscar) fue el encargado del diseño de vestuario que creó algunos de los espectaculares modelos que luce la Lisi, como el vestido blanco de noche o el “bikini de nata” que lleva al salir de la tarta.

Esta comedia (porque a pesar de todo es una comedia) fue la primera película que protagonizó Virna Lisi y la que la lanzó al estrellato. ¡Y la verdad es que no extraña porque sólo por ver la escena en la que sale de dentro de la tarta vale la pena!

The film I’m recommending you this week is “How to murder your wife” directed in 1965 by Richard Quine and starred by Jack Lemon, Virna Lisi and Terry Thomas.

Stanley Ford (Lemon) is a happy unmarried bachelor who lives with his valet Charles Firbank (Terry-Thomas). They both have reached a curious deal: no wives at home or he will leave.

One night during a bachelor’s party Stanley gets drunk and fells for a stunning Italian bombshell who steps out of a large cake. The next morning he wakes up with the girl lying naked on the bed next to him… and married to her! To make the situation more funny she nearly speaks a word of English… Both Stanley and Charles suffer such a shock that the valet decides to leave home after their agreement has been broken. Meanwhile Stanley doesn’t know how to get rid of his wife who turns out to be a cheerful , affectionate, sexy and a bit histrionic. One evening his ex-valet suggests him to “murder her accidentally” in exchange of returning home. It’s then when Stanley begins to plot his plan…

Moss Mabry (four times Oscar awards nominee) was in charge of the wardrobe design and he created the spectacular gowns Virna Lisi wears in the film, such as the white night gown or the “fresh cream bikini” she wears when stepping out the cake.

This comedy (because it is a comedy after all) was the movie who brought Virna Lisi to stardom (and the first she starred!). And I completely understand ‘cause the scene where she steps out the cake is worth to see it!!
